Two Congressional Caucuses Denounce Anti-Choice Legislation in Puerto Rico Senate

Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez, the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress joined: Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Reps. Brenda Lawrence, Jackie Speier, and Lois Frankel and Vice Chairs Reps. Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia; and the House Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Barbara Lee and Diana DeGette in issuing the following statement opposing Puerto Rico Senate Bill 693, which seeks to limit one’s right to a safe abortion after the 22nd week of pregnancy:

“In the dark of night with no public hearing, a Senate Commission in Puerto Rico’s legislature moved to advance a cruel and dangerous bill that would target abortion access on the island.

“We strongly denounce this bill, which will have severe consequences for reproductive rights for the people of Puerto Rico. Every person deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about pregnancy and childbirth, free from interference from politicians. This legislation is part of a nationwide effort to turn back the clock on reproductive rights and limit access to abortion care, and we stand opposed to abortion bans and restrictions, wherever they occur.

“In recent history, Puerto Rico has been at the forefront of the right to a safe abortion. We strongly urge Puerto Rico’s Senate to abandon this reckless legislation and instead stand on the side of reproductive justice for all.”
