Puerto Rican Mayor Carmen Maldonado defends actions of the Federal Energy Secretary in Puerto Rico

The mayor of Municipality of Morovis in Puerto Rico, Carmen Maldonado-González, reacted to the criticism issued by Republican congresspeople towards the Secretary of the Department of Energy, Jennifer Granholm for personally attending to the energy crisis in Puerto Rico during her successive trips to the island to meet with officials, mayors and community leaders.

“Today, I am going to write to the Chair of the Congressional Energy and Commerce Committee, Republican Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rogers to explain that Secretary Granholm is conducting an energy reality check of Puerto Rico under the instructions of President Joe Biden, given the failure of the Pierluisi administration to address the crisis effectively," said Maldonado-González, who is also member of the Board of the Association of Mayors.

Maldonado-González's defense of Granholm's work extends to the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee, Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA). The work of the Secretary of the Department of Energy has manifested itself at the moment in some four visits called PR100 Community Participation Tour.

“This series of events coordinated with the Hispanic Federation has been very effective, allowing residents and community members, as well as the fellow mayors of Loíza and Salinas, to speak directly with the Secretary about their suggestions for the PR100 study”, added Maldonado-González. Launched in February of 2022 with funding from FEMA, the study is looking at ways to help Puerto Rico meet its ambitious 100% renewable electricity policy goal by 2050.

“I want to thank President Joe Biden and Secretary Granholm for this initiative, and I feel compelled to defend it against political criticism from the opposition. Neither McMorris Rogers nor Griffith know what it's like to have lived through the tragedies of Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and later Fiona. In working to forge a better energy future for Puerto Rico, we must all work together with allies at the state, federal, and non-profit levels,” concluded Maldonado-González.
